A New Cosmology
Considering the photographic etymology of phos-graphê, or drawing with light, I burned lodgepole pine cones—which release their seeds through fire—onto silver gelatin paper to better understand catastrophic change as it occurs in the natural world. These miniature explosions, formed in the dark, are a complete system of creation. Each produces its own light and casts its own shadow; the most basic elements needed to form a photograph. To express the theoretical possibility of parallel universes, I took thirty of these images and inverted them from positives into negatives in order to create a new cosmology.
